The word mapping strategy provides students with a way to break words down into smaller parts to aid in determining meaning.

Students are taught this strategy using the mnemonic MAPS.
Map the word parts
Attack the meaning of each part
Predict the word's meaning
See if you are right!

The instructor models each step and explains it then has the student's practice until they achieve proficiency with the strategy. Lists of prefixes, suffixes and roots along with their definitions are provided for students as a quick reference and to aid in learning.

The Word Mapping Routine incorporates the morphological components of English that are important for students to own so they can access meaning of many unknown words.  I like the process of making a predication and comparing it to the actual definition because it will make clear that sometimes the meanings of the roots are a more obscure link than a straightforward definition.

12/4- Word Mapping Strategy

We attended the word mapping strategy- having a strategy for students in the middle school to break apart words based on their morpheme (or meaningful parts) will be very helpful to many middle school teachers. The word map is a nice matrix to help students with decoding BIG words

This strategy is intended to help older students (grade 6+) quickly learn how to predict the meaning of unknown words.

This reminded me of my morphology focus when teaching AIG students. My approach was to challenging and not organized compared to Word Mapping. This strategy is a systematic approach where students learn to identify prefixes, suffixes, and roots. This allows them to predict the meaning of unknown words. This will be an excellent strategy, especially in science.

Completed Word Mapping with Elizabeth Gibbs on December 5, 2017 at Burns Middle School in Lawndale, This strategy reminds me of my focus on morphology when I was teaching gifted students. Other teachers felt that students who were not gifted were not "ready" for this. Had I known about this word mapping strategy, I could have been more influential in them seeing this differently. This enables students to learn how to predict unknown words because they are taught prefixes, suffixes, and roots. The can then use these skills to predict the meaning of words. I feel that this would be especially helpful for students in science.
