Word Mapping Strategy

During my first implementation of Word Mapping, I presented to a college professor, a high school special education teacher, and a para professional during a LETRS Module 4 vocabulary  training.  I felt that the Word Mapping Strategy would be helpful for them to experience.  They all found it to be very helpful and something they felt could be utilized well to improve vocabulary instruction in all of their classrooms.

My second implementation of Word Mapping occurred with 2 friends and the daughter of a friend, a recent graduate school graduate.  Although they were not taking the information back into the classroom, they all recognized the benefits of Word Mapping and the Memory Table.  One participant, a social worker who was transitioning from the hospital to the school setting was very appreciative of learning the routine.  She will be working with students who may have academic concerns as well as social emotional.  She felt that just understanding this routine, but be something she could talk to teachers of content areas in the future.

Narrative

  1. Describe the group or student (size of group, level, student characteristics, etc.)
A teacher, Alicia agreed to complete the Word Mapping Strategy with me.  She is a fellow SIM candidate.
  1. Describe the length of implementation (weeks or months, amount of time per day, days per week)
We got together twice.  The first time, I worked on created my documents, reading through the book, brainstorming with her.  The second time we got together, I presented lesson 4 to her in its entirety.
  1. Submit student progress chart(s) without student names.
Alicia received a 100% on her assignments.
  1. Submit a narrative log of your implementation experiences (what went well and/or poorly, adjustments made if necessary, ideas generated for issues encountered,  and impact.)
I found the memory table to be easier to teach (and understand) than the Word Map.  I appreciate the visual aspect of the word map and the memory word.  When teaching the Word Map, it was helpful to use the Cue Cards and the Definitions List.  It is also helpful to use the book.  I don't love how the prediction definition is sometimes different than the real definition.
