Implementation of Strategy

The student is a 17 year old female in the eleventh grade.  She is enrolled in several AP courses, including AP English which she currently has an 81%. She describes herself as a good student that reads well, comprehends what she reads, and that she enjoys learning. However, she scored a 28% on her Word Mapping pretest.

I began working with this student on Mar 1, 2022 with the hopes of completing one to two lessons per week for thirteen weeks.  Each of our lessons takes about 45 minutes to complete. We finished our last lesson on May 18 and completed the post-test.

Pre-test  28%
Average Score  90-100% Very good
Post-Test  91%

Reflection

  1. Describe the group or student (size of group, level, student characteristics, etc.)
I had two colleagues participate as students.

Describe the length of implementation (weeks or months, amount of time per day, days per week)
We did lesson #4 in approximately 15 minutes

Submit student progress chart(s) without student names.
All student artifacts are uploaded; there is no ongoing progress chart at this time

Submit a narrative log of your implementation experiences (what went well and/or poorly, adjustments made if necessary, ideas generated for issues encountered,  and impact.)
There are several parts to this learning strategy and I relied on my book to help guide me through the components to ensure I did not miss a part. As I become more familiar with the strategy with practice I am sure it will happen more fluidly. I do imagine for some students they may require a good deal of support with the process and perhaps more opportunities for "I do, we do" before we can do independent practice.

Submit a narrative describing coaching, feedback, and follow up, identifying your coach.
I will contact Diane for feedback and coaching.

Summary of Implementation

As a complex area resource teacher and not having my own classroom, I was not able to teach the mapping strategy to students.  In addition, with the pandemic, school visits to classrooms were limited.

I chose to work with children in my neighborhood.  They ranged from a 4th grader, 7th grader and a sophomore in high school. Prior to doing the lessons with them, I constructed the word maps and memory tables with feedback from our coach, Diane Gillam.  I made revisions based on the recommendations from my coach.  I spent 1 week teaching lessons 1-4 via web-ex.

Overall, I feel the lesson went well and the students enjoyed it.  They were very confident and engaging.  I followed the script in the word mapping book which was very helpful in keeping flow of the lesson.  Although it was done virtually, I was able to give them hard copies of the Word Mapping, Memory Table graphic organizer and Common Word Parts handout.  Having hard copies minimize the confusion of dropping in the link to the chat and having them split screen.

I submitted my video lesson along with my implementation checklist to my coach, Diane Gillam.  She provided me with very helpful feedback.  The feedback she gave me was when to stick to the order when introducing the morpheme types (prefix, root, suffix).   One of the things that my coach asked was for the students work.  The students turned in completion work through google.  I uploaded one copy of it as evidence.

Overall, this was a great learning experience and I'm glad I was able to do it with students from different grade levels.

Reflection

As a complex area resource teacher I was not able to teach the mapping strategy to students.  I chose to work with a colleague who is also a resource teacher.  We worked together for a few weeks to construct our word maps and also our memory tables.  We received feedback from our coach, Diane Gillam, and made revisions based on the recommendations from our coach.  Mandy and I spent 1 week teaching lessons 1-4.  Overall, I feel the lesson went well.  I followed the script in the word mapping book.  It was very helpful to keep the flow of the lesson and helped to ensure I covered all of the key elements.  The only adjustment made was we taught the lesson virtually.  We needed to make sure we had all the materials prepared and distributed prior to the lesson.
I submitted my video lesson along with my implementation checklist to my coach, Diane Gillam.  She provided me with very helpful feedback.  The feedback she gave me was when to stick to the order when introducing the morpheme types (prefix, root, suffix).  Also, to state a source when having the students look up the meaning to the word for Step S (ie:learnersdictionary.com).  The final feedback she gave me I actually caught when I rewatched my video.  I misstated the definition of a compound prefix.
