A Dream Come True - Dr. Schumaker

I fell in love with Jean Schumaker's story of how she was influenced by her parents, education, and life opportunities to become one of the founders of the Strategic Instruction Model. At first, I was taking notes because I wanted to remember every single thing she said...and then I stopped because I realized I would never forget her story.

Before hearing her story, I already loved SIM because I truly believe in it. After hearing her story, I sent my principal a text telling her I wanted to move to Kansas and work at the Center for Research on Learning.

Better Conversations

Better conversations make us better people – and we would be better able to meet the needs of our students if we have better conversations. This is so insightful. We have good people in the profession, but have we found a way to talk/problem solve so that we impact the students?

This was so thought provoking. So often we are focused on what to do. Or we are focused on building the capacity to understand the why. This presentation really got at the how to do it.

As a leader in our district, not only leading the student service staff, I have the responsibility of assisting in leading the administrative team. This presentation made me self-reflect on how I have interacted with both populations during the past three years and the impact of that interaction. But more importantly, it made me think about how I want to interact with them in the future. My belief system supports collaboration, but I am not sure my practice has been as strong as I would like it to be. I look forward to setting goals and refining my practice.

Keynote Address Richard Culatta Technology as a Tool to Redesign Learning

Culatta's 6 Transformational Technology Trends outlined a way to address the capacity of technology in classrooms.  The idea of quick research tools to evaluate what is happening in the moment in schools is particularly important. The rapid changes in apps and programs make timeliness essential.
