How asynchronous learning can be used in the blended classroom.

For Blended Learning 2, asynchronous learning can be utilized effectively in the Blended Classroom and can be beneficial to students in multiple ways. As was discussed in Badge 1, there are both pros and cons to the Blended Classroom model, however when used effectively students are able to have great success.

In the article, "Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Learning: Which is Right for Your Learners?" it is stated that asynchronous learning has a more learner-centered approach. It also states that learners have the ability to complete work in their own time, which offers flexibility. Learners also have more time to reflect on the material they're learning, thus being more likely to have a greater understanding. In the article, "Asynchronous vs. Synchronous E-learning", it is stated that learning can be achieved even when a student is offline, i.e. not in a "class" or meeting with a teacher, further supporting the idea that students can complete work at their own pace and on their own time.

In the Flipped Classroom model of Blended Learning, I believe that asynchronous learning can be highly beneficial to students. The article "Asynchronous Learning (i.e. Location Independent Learning)" states that "asynchronous learning is the idea that students learn the same material at different times and locations" and that "asynchronous learning is also beneficial in that it accounts for different learning styles". In the flipped classroom, students are able to access new information in a way that is attainable for them before putting their new knowledge to use with hands-on activities in person. It is also a valuable tool for pre-teaching. Through asynchronous learning, students are able to get a preview of information that will be further covered by the instructor.

Although asynchronous learning is typically thought of as a strictly online learning tool, when used correctly I believe that it can also be beneficial for students who also meet in-person, such as in a flipped classroom environment. Students can access new material in the day or days before meeting in person, and then have the opportunity to put their newfound knowledge to work when meeting in-person. As the article "The Basics of K-12 Asynchronous Learning: Definition, Benefits, and Activities" states, "taking the time to process content and discussion at a more flexible pace leads to a richer, more personalized experience overall".
