In 2nd grade content literacy is extremely important within all subject areas. I try to integrate literacy in as many subjects as I can. I have a high ELL population within my classroom and vocabulary and language is extremely important to use every day. Having discussions on vocabulary is necessary to build that background knowledge so that students will understand the content that they are learning.  One standard that is used frequently in 2nd grade is CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.10 which states:  By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. In order for students to be successful with this standard, and the informational text version of this standard, they are exposed to texts that are above their reading level as well as tier 3 vocabulary. Not only must they be able to read these texts, but they are required to collaborate with their peers and have discussions on the texts. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
