Evidence of Completion
First, provide proof of attendance to the Early Release Face-to-Face PD professional learning by uploading your  "Content Area Lit. - Before/After Chart" (or an image/link to the shared PDF).  The blue column entitled "Before" should be completed. Additionally, the reflection question, “Which strand will I focus on for session #2?” should be completed.

Second, reflect on Session #1 and begin to answer the question, “What is content literacy?”.  Please include a description of a previous example of use of content literacy in your classroom based on what you learned in the Content Literacy Session. Consider the following questions:
    • Did students engage in a specific focus area of Content Literacy? If so, which one(s)?
    • Exactly how did you implement one of the 5 focus areas of Content Literacy?
    • Was the activity successful? 
      • Why or why not? What would have made it successful?
    • If you were to repeat this lesson, what would you change based on what you have learned? In what ways would you modify you have modified this use of content literacy in your classroom to deepen incorporation of content literacy or involve an additional focus area?
You will submit these reflections now (in the format of your choosing) but know that you will be asked to revisit your response after completion of each session.

Fourth, review your curriculum standards for your grade level and provide a reflection (your choice of platform) connecting your curriculum to content literacy.  Be sure to cite specifics from your standards rather than generalities.

Lastly, you will need to include a screenshot of your canvas posting for "wow, wish and wonder" for the Digital Learning Competencies introduction.


In addition to the required components, you may feel compelled to provide additional artifacts of learning.  If this is the case, include any or all of the artifacts below.

Re submission of Module 1 Reflection

I learned that content literacy is what we teach and how we teach it, and this is where literacy instruction comes in. with the goal being increasing student's comprehension, ability to write, and become a competent learner of that skill. A previous example of content literacy would be the skill on Author's Perspective that I taught my students. I defined, described the skill, demonstrated through CAI, and modeled the skill through the use of examples and a skit that I wrote. The activity was successful and my students were more engaged. They were amused at the skit but were able to understand best when we discussed the meaning afterward. The skit necessitated being completed after a snow/weather related day and I would have changed the order of the lesson by doing the skit before the computer assisted instruction. (CAI)

My lesson was successful with my students. After viewing the skit which I created after a prolonged time out where students shared their perspectives, my students were able to understand that not everyone has the same perspective on a topic. Most of my EC students were 70% or greater when given a follow up prompt.

What is content literacy? Lesson, Reflection and curriculum standards

What is content literacy?  Content literacy to me means being literate in a content area. This is different than content knowledge.  Being content literate means having the skills and strategies to be able to read and write and talk about a topic beyond just stating facts. Having content literacy across all content areas enhances a child’s desire to learn and become a more independent student and a lifelong learner.   Having deeper conversations can lead to more authentic learning and students becoming more “content literate.”
Example of lesson To have a deeper understanding of embryology, students needed to understand the vocabulary associated with the study of life cycles.  Before introducing vocabulary, students turned and talked about what they thought a life cycle was. After sharing what their group discussed, our class came up with a list of vocabulary words that we thought would increase our knowledge of the stages of an animal’s life cycle.  Students created flip books to show their understanding of life cycle vocabulary, including pictures, written definitions, and the word used in a sentence. We also used flocabulary to review vocabulary. Students also created life cycle charts from a variety of animals after reading nonfiction books about the animal.
After observing our chicks hatch, students collaborated to create a powerpoint using Google Slides to show understanding of a chick’s life cycle.  Students included photos, observations, charts and facts from research to show the development of a chick’s life cycle. Some students added animal sounds.  Some added movement. Student groups shared their knowledge of a chick’s life cycle with their classmates and families.
Reflection I think this unit was successful, however, if I were teaching embryology now, I would use flipgrid to enhance the unit.  I would (or have my students) pose a question for their classmates to respond to by creating short videos.  I think flipgrid would have improved the unit by getting the students to talk more about embryology, and what they had observed when the chick’s hatched.
