Staff Development in Fundations of Sentence Writing

On January 6, 2020 Betsy Hamilton and I held a staff development on the implementation of Fundations in Sentence Writing. All teachers present had a PD on this strategy in the summer of 2019 with Susan Trumbo. Our training showed a video of Kathy instructing students after students had been using the program for about 7 weeks. 
Eight teachers present were 6th through 8th grade language arts teachers and one administrator. Teachers explored student engagement, materials needed for the program, routines required, and time needed. As a group we also discussed if we had seen signs of students using what they learn in their own writing. We have not found enough evidence of this yet. We did feel like using the language of the program and the students' knowledge of Fundations in Sentence Writing will drive our revision lessons on authentic student writing.
The professional development lasted 30 minutes.  Teachers present had a base knowledge of the program. One teacher has decided to start the program immediately.

Guided a teacher through the steps of the strategy from October of 2016 to February of 2017.

A requirement of my role as a special education instructional coach is to provide assistance to teachers when implementing intensive interventions. After co-presenting with my professional developer in October of 2016, I was able to assist a teacher as she implemented this strategy with two groups of students.  The groups met 5 times a week for at least 30-40 minutes for strategy instruction.  Each group was able to complete the required lessons to be able to independently write simple sentences using the four types of sentences.  
In the future, I will be providing this PD to others within our school system.
