Implemented with one student, twice a week over the course of a semester

I implemented this strategy with a high school student who wanted to improve her writing skills for college.  We met twice a week until COVID-19 closed schools.  It took a couple of weeks to get things set up to finish teaching the strategy virtually.  Her performance and attention in the virtual format was a struggle, but we were able to finish the strategy and my coach was able to provide feedback.

Implementation experiences

Fundamentals in sentence strategies has several asspects that went very well. The pace was made by student knowledge. Each lesson was not needed so we created a pace that was just right for the class. Adjustments were made depending on individual needs. Small groups were pulled for students needing more time while other students were able to move forward with skills.
Finding time to reach all students after small groups were formed became tricky. I was lucky to have two teachers in the room, which made this easier. Managing time and classroom behavior were the keys to success.
The impact these lessons had on students was extremely positive. They felt enabled because they were able to do the exercises. Implementing their new (and old) knowledge into their writing is a continual lesson, but using the vocabulary from the strategy made it successful.

coaching, feedback, and follow up

My coach is Susan Trumbo. She is my light in the dark. She provides me positive feedback on my lessons and suggestions to make my lessons more efficient and engaging. She has even taught my lessons to show me her style and proficiency. Feedback is given in person and through email on a timely basis and frequently. She is always there for me whenever I need her.

1. Describe the group 2. Describe the length of implementation

I worked with 16 seventh graders every other day for 18 weeks.
I also worked with 22 eighth graders every day for 20 weeks.
Time spent in the seventh grade was between 15 and 25 minutes for each lesson (every other day). Time with the 8th graders was about 20 minutes each day.
