If I were still working in the classroom as the primary instructor, I would use a unit organizer at the beginning of every unit of instruction in order to help my students understand the main learning goals for the unit as well as help them to organize the key information and see how it is all connected/related. Moreover, the extended unit organizer would help students create a study tool they could reference for periodic review and in preparation for assessments.

Description of class:
21 students in a high school Algebra 1 class that was approximately 55 minutes in length

Duration of implementation:
This unit organizer was co-constructed during one class period and took approximately 42 minutes from start to finish. The co-construction was to activate prior knowledge of related content as well as introduce key vocabulary that would be used throughout the unit. Though the co-construction took longer than is “recommended,” I worked to help students make connections as we co-constructed, which is a key focus for NCTM standards. I believe having these discussions throughout the co-construction help students to see how content is related as well as give them a foundation from which to build as they proceed through the unit of instruction. I could have simply given students the information to fill into the unit organizer, which would significantly have decreased the time used to co-construct, but I believe that would also have decreased the value of using this content enhancement routine.

The co-construction that is portrayed in the video was well received by students. Though the class in which I completed this co-construction was not my own class (since I am no longer a classroom teacher) and because the students did not have a great familiarity with me, all students did engage in the co-construction and several participated by verbally providing key details for each key topic. Though the time period for this co-construction took longer than I intended (or is recommended), it appeared as if the students found this activity worthwhile.

**Note: For some reason the video recorded, but the audio did not. I have had our IT person try to diagnose the problem, but he is not sure why this happened.
