Artifact 1: Written Critique

  • Read a popular news article or watch/listen to a news broadcast of a scientific study and assess whether it is a valid interpretation of the research by writing a critique comparing and contrasting the original research with the popular interpretation.
    • Introduction
      • Introduce the scientific study summarized in the popular news article.
      • Construct a thesis that takes a position on the validity of what is communicated in the popular news article.
    • Multiple body paragraphs providing evidence that supports your thesis.
      • Your evidence may include:
        • Conclusion validity
        • Properly isolated variables
        • The sample size appropriateness
        • The sample selection appropriateness
    • Conclusion
      • Summarize the evidence you presented and how it supports your original thesis.
      • Describe the significance of your critique of the popular news article.

Artifact 2 Format Choice Critique

  • Read a popular news article or watch/listen to a news broadcast of a scientific study and assess whether it is a valid interpretation of the research.  It should be a critique comparing and contrasting the research with the popular interpretation.  It can be written, an audio recording, or a video.
    • Introduction
      • Introduce the scientific study summarized in the popular news article.
      • Construct a thesis that takes a position on the validity of what is communicated in the popular news article.
    • Multiple pieces of evidence that supports your thesis.
      • Your evidence may include:
        • Conclusion validity
        • Properly isolated variables
        • The sample size appropriateness
        • The sample selection appropriateness
        • How the investigation may be improved to increase reliability (in regards to sample size and sample selection).
    • Conclusion
      • Summarize the evidence you presented and how it supports your original thesis.
      • Describe the significance of your critique of the popular news article.
