Inquire

Several of my sessions focused on inquiry.  Inquiry is at the heart of what we do as School Librarians.  My big takeaways are:
  • incorporate visual literacy by having students look at an image related to the topic of study and discuss what they notice
  • use primary sources as a discussion starter
  • It's never too early to plant an inquiry vocabulary.  Even kindergartners can understand terms like nonfiction, research, and credible sources.
  • Make inquiry hands-on.  Incorporate "show and tell" - allow students to touch an artifact related to the unit of study.

We used the AASL standards to plan with this picture book. it was great to have a collaborative group to help explore the standards & apply.

I learned that there are six shared foundations: inquire, include, collaborate, curate, explore and engage.
