Word ID Strategy Group

My Word ID group was comprised of 6 students in grades 6-8. I had 2 6th graders, 1 7th grader, and 3 8th graders. Students were at least 2 years behind in reading when beginning the group. Students were all identified as special education with weaknesses in reading fluency and/or comprehension. The Word ID group began in January 2018 and concluded in June 2018.

Students overall made progress with their reading. Some were able to reach grade level material. I had 3 students working on grade level material at the conclusion of the Word ID group. Two of my students were reading one level below grade level at the conclusion of the Word ID group. Out of the 6 students, 5 students were able to show at least 2 years growth in their reading. The biggest challenge within the group was consistent use of the strategy when reading. Students continued to require prompting to use their strategy and DISSECT words.

Coaching was amazing. I felt Susan was a great support throughout implementing the Word ID Strategy. She had great input and was always there to answer any of my questions or address my concerns.

Implementation Experiences

Implementation went well considering this was the first time I have used it.  Keeping the binders organized and up to date was the most difficult part of the intervention.  I made a large banner of the word DISSECT and placed on the board in room where it could be seen by all.  Students were amazed at their ability to read on grade level passages.

Self-Report Continued

11/14/17
Due to holidays, teacher absence, and shortened schedules for various activities, I have not been able to report in Hoxie for some time. However, progress has been made with the 8th grade students. Five of the six 8th graders have completed the Controlled Practice by passing a narrative and expository passage at their reading level as determined by the STAR assessment given at the beginning of the semester. Two of those 5 students have already begun working in Stage 6: Advanced Practice.
I expect all students to be in this stage by Friday, Nov. 17.

11/16/17
Today was a half day for P.T.C. so classes were only 30 minutes long. Only had time to work with one student who passed the requirements for the narrative reading at the Advanced Practice Stage

Self-Reports Continued

10/17/17
8th grade students began Controlled Practice today. I chose to use the guided practice for our first session. Students were paired and given a science textbook. They were asked to skim the pages, write down any unfamiliar words, and then DISSECT each word. Partners were there to help students in remembering the steps if needed.

10/31/17
Progress was hampered due to Homecoming activities for the week of Oct. 16-20. Progress was also slow due to instructor being away at SIM conference last week, Oct. 26-27. Students continued in Control Practice today and many have met the criteria for one story and will work on the next story this Thursday. Hope to complete Controlled Practice by Friday, Nov. 3, 2017.

Self-Reports During Implementation

9/25/17
I have completed Stage 1 which included the 3 parts of the Pretest, the TOWRE, and the Reader Self Perception Scale. We will be moving into the Prerequisite Lessons this week and hopefully be in the Describe Stage by end of the week.

10/9/17
Progress has gone effectively and quickly. All students completed Stage 2: Describe Stage on 10/5/17. All students completed Stage 3: Model Stage on 10/6/17. Stage 3: Verbal Practice will begin tomorrow, 10/10/17.

10/13/17
All 8th graders completed the Verbal Practice today. Went very well!! Wrote words with 15 or more letters on the board and had students copy them into their notebooks. Then told them to DISSECT each word. When everyone was done, students went to board and DISSECTED the word. Students were very encouraging to each other when mistakes were made. Will begin Controlled Practice next week!
