Increasing SIM Implementation through alignment with District and School Initiatives

A powerful way to increase teacher (and administrator) excitement around the benefits of SIM is to support their discovery of the direct connections between SIM implementation and other “competing” initiatives.  During 2014-15, Florida’s State Personnel Development Grant SIM Project added 3 new formats of professional development provided to schools: Content Clinics, SIM-based Lesson Study and a Leadership Summit for Instructional Coaches and Administrators.  This session will provide a brief overview of each format, how it supported alignment with district and school initiatives and discuss outcomes and lessons learned.

Action Research Pam Leitzell and Elizabeth Gibbs

ACTION RESEARCH“Action research can provide answers for educators in search of evidence that their work is making a difference. It provides a process that promotes inquiry, reflection, and the careful use of data to investigate pertinent issues related to practices in schools. The process empowers educators to tackle difficult questions and essentially becomes the energizing force that can drive change. This session will focus on: (a) the Action Research matrix shared at the 2009 Conference and article by Catherine M. Brighton and Tonya R. Moon, Action Research Step by Step: A Tool for Educators to Change Their Worlds, and (b)  the seven steps involved when creating an action research plan and (c) “lessons learned” from the field.

Introducing SIM Micro-credentials

KUCRL is implementing a Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) credentialing/digital badge system. The system is designed to recognize not only what participants learn about components of SIM but also what they accomplish as a result of your professional development in various routines and strategies. During this general session, attendees will learn about credentialing systems, the workings of the SIM system, and their part in the system. SIM Professional Developers will be guided through (a) how to sign into Badge List, (b) how to upload evidence to their credential, and (c) how to download their SIM PD credential to various sites.

Understanding Academic Language

Understanding Academic Language is a learning strategy that can help students better comprehend content area textbooks.  This strategy is needed because the writers of academic textbooks often use complex language structures that are very different from the everyday speech patterns with which students are familiar. Thus, many learners find academic text extremely difficult to understand. Built around the four-step TEXT Strategy, this manual provides a framework that teachers can use to convey this information. The six lessons outline the procedures for conducting the pretest and posttest, and the procedures and materials for teaching the TEXT Strategy.
