Concept Comparison Routine

The concept comparison routine was the easiest for me to complete.  Much of my current work involves comparing components of a bigger concept.  I was able to use this with my college level students to help them organize their thoughts to compare similarities and differences between ideas such as the two types of brain injuries and the two modes of augmentative and alternative communication.  Using it with students in higher ed, they were easily able to add their ideas to the chart with prior knowledge and new knowledge.  I could see where with younger students this could be more of challenge.

Log for CICO and C&C

What Went Well:  Focusing on content that was very familiar to me and something that will be useful in the field later.
Challenge: Perhaps not for this group since they had some background knowledge on the topic, but when eliciting responses from participants, they may not have the background knowledge or provide correct information so talking thorough the information and making sure that misinformation isn't construed from the participants or they may not have much to add if they don't know a lot about the two concepts.
Next Time: Continue to focus on concepts that I'm very familiar with and can convey easily to participants.
Adjustments or continue to remember: Remember to use the + with the characteristics as that makes it easier for generating like characteristics.

The only challenging part of this routine was making sure I touched on each part of it; there are many components and I worried i would leave one out. However, I know that will get easier the more frequently I use the routine and remember what each letter of COMPARING stands for.

This was a great tool- my students enjoyed the visual display of the differences and similarities between concepts that are usually confused. I would use the same procedures the next time because the information was retained so well through it. I did not have to make any adjustments of any kind to successfully use it with my students.
