The Book Whisperer, or the book that changed my journey as a classroom teacher.

I read The Book Whisperer two summers ago.  I have to admit, it was the first summer in many, many years of teaching that I spent time actively reading books to better my craft.  Everything that Donalyn Miller wrote about invigorated me to change how I was teaching reading in the classroom.  I have a long way to go still.  I can see so much improvement needed in how they use their independent reading journals and keep them updating their reading list, books to read, etc.  However, their letters that we write back and forth every week has changed the relationship I have with all of my students.

I will have the opportunity to attend Scholastic's Reading Summit tomorrow in San Jose.  Donalyn Miller will be there! I am looking forward to extend my learning on independent reading and improve the implementation of it in my classroom next fall.
